i have been waiting all.bloody.summer for my booking at forza win to come around. i booked up for one of the first weeks back in june but thanks to my scatterbrain i doubled up on plans, and by the time i came to change my reservation the only spot left was the first weekend of september. you pesky londoners and your eager taste buds! grrr.
forza win is the brainchild of the clever pizza pilgrims boys, and despite a little hiccup a few weeks into their venture (being shut down at their previous venue and having to scramble to relocate) forza win has been a huge hit with food fans this summer.
happily, the new location ended up being mere minutes from my house, so no complaints here! arriving as the sun set over the peculiarly beautiful gasworks in east london, we were welcomed with gorgeous, refreshing aperol spritz cocktails.
the atmosphere is fun, no-frills and food focused. a few pallette benches with cushions and long tables with cafe lights and old tomato cans make for the decor, with the two enormous pompeii pizza ovens taking pride of place.
we started with a delicious, perfectly cooked ragu, before the main event: the pizza. the boys dish out the woodfired pizzas as quickly as they can make them, and it’s a dive in and share situation – so get friendly with your neighbour.
we gobbled up portobello mushroom, spicy salami, garlic and zuchini pizzas, to name a few. the servings just kept coming and though relatively modest in size, we all had plenty to eat.
to finish, we had gelupo vanilla and ricotta ice cream with – wait for it – olive oil and sea salt. sounds weird, and at first, admittedly, it is. but mix that olive oil and salt in with your ice cream so it is evenly distributed and dear lord is it amazing. who’da thunk it?
as you can see from the pictures, it is casual eating – paper plates and napkins, plastic cups, and dessert served in styrofoam. but the quality of food is superb and the atmosphere great fun. our evening ended with some singing to accompany our ice cream and the last of the wine.
forza win have been booked out all summer, but thanks to the unexpected relocation, a few extra tickets have become available for the last of the dates in september so keep an eye on their twitter and facebook pages and you might be lucky enough to snap some up. according to their website, the boys are also planning a last hurrah for those who supported them over the summer, so if you’ve already been, stay tuned!
i asked what they have in store after forza win shuts down the fires at the end of september, and was told that after taking a break over winter, plans are in the works for something a little different next year, perhaps involving a rooftop organic garden. can’t wait to see what they come up with.
