street feast

street food markets have been popping up all over london in the last year, with fans ditching the the cosy warmth of restaurants to wrap up warm and sit on cold concrete ground while devouring the hottest new stall’s offerings.

street feast has collected the best traders in town and set up camp in a carpark in shoreditch for the summer. we ventured down on friday night to do our duty and taste test every single stall. ribs dripping in sticky bbq sauce, juicy korean burgers, bubbling wood fire pizza… it was a taste sensation.

we turned up around 7.30 on friday evening, while it was still light and gloriously sunny. after a turn around the carpark venue to see what was on offer and picking up some pear ciders and beers from the camden town brewery bar, we made our first stop at kimchi cult.

korean sliders on glossy buns with dripping, juicy meat. we ordered a regular cheeseburger – heavenly, and the kimchi cult burger with a dollop of fresh, mouth-watering korean kimchi.

the ribman

the ribman

next up was the ribman. an institution in east london thanks to his weekly stall in brick lane and famous for his devine pulled pork rolls and hot sauce. we shared two huge helpings of ribs. all vanity went out the window with our group, and everyone else in the carpark, wandering around for the rest of the evening with smudges of bbq sauce all over our cheeks.

it’s just that hot

the ribman

chicken satay and prawn skewers from hardcore prawn followed, before our bulging tummies told us it was time for a break. we headed around the corner to a bar to warm up and let our first course digest before braving round two.

mama's jerk station

mama’s jerk station

mama’s jerk station was a definite highlight. the smell of chicken cooking on sizzling bbqs wafting through the air was the dominant aroma that greeted us from two blocks away.

jerk chicken wraps with fresh salad, extra fried plantain and tear-inducing hot sauce. words don’t describe the pleasure. when i accidentally let go of the bottom of the wrap and a few precious morsels of chicken dropped to the ground, there was hell to pay. we were fighting over who got the last bite.

the queue for big apple hot dogs was too long even for my dedicated taste buds, so i’ll be popping down early on in the next few weeks to get my hands on one.

homeslice

homeslice

homeslice was our final dinner destination of the night. oddly, the boys said they were too full to try the wood fired pizza, so it was left to us girls to man up and make room in our bellies.

one look at our glorious, oozing margherita and the goat cheese, spinach and mushroom slices, and they were begging for a bite.

despite groaning in satisfaction from our feast, i felt it would be rude to leave without sampling one of molly bakes’ ‘cuptail’ cupcakes. pina colada, white russian and cherry amaretto were on offer, but i opted for the sweet as can be strawberry daiquiri.

a gorgeous little cake topped with some of the creamiest frosting i’ve ever tasted and topped with a delicate little strawberry. i was rather miffed when the others insisted on a bite.

and finally… from molly bakes

if you can’t stand queuing and sitting on the ground, or have a birthday or something special coming up, you can also book a group table inside the ‘car wash dining room’ which guarantees seating, cutlery and a waitress to go fetch whatever food you fancy.

street feast is hanging around all summer, so londoners make sure you head down one night. its at sclater street carpark from 5pm to midnight every friday until july 20.
