Christmas Sugar Cookies

This Christmas sugar cookie recipe is crumbly and buttery. Save these for Christmas Day or eat them all right away.

These Christmas sugar cookies are not only delicious and festive, but it is also the perfect holiday activity for the whole family. During the holidays I love seeing the youngsters sitting around the table for a quiet hour decorating cookies. Bright icing and fun sprinkles really bring out creative expression in all.

When you were young maybe Santa used to give you all your presents but when you get older it can sometimes be tough pick out presents for others on a yearly basis. These Christmas sugar cookies make perfect presents, especially if you need to give presents out to a whole family. I have cousins who bake delicious goods and candies every year, they give them out in disposable festive tins. It’s a fun present that I look forward to every year!

Sugar cookies can be made into any shapes and size. Consider adding another craft activity but having people design custom cookie cutters. This can be done but having them draw a picture and then cut it out with wax paper. Take the wax paper and put it on top of the cookie dough after it has been rolled out and carefully cut around the wax paper with a paring knife. It can be so much fun to have each and every cookie shape not only be uniquely decorated but have a custom and special shape.

Ingredients: Sugar cookie dough

1 cup of white flour (sifted) 2 sticks of unsalted butter 1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of baking soda Extra flour for dusting

Icing 2 cups of icing sugar 1/8 cup of cold water Food coloring

Sprinkles for decorating


Preheat the oven to 350º Mix the butter and sugar in a bowl until smooth. In a separate bowl mix the flour salt and baking soda. Add the dry mixture into the butter mixture in spoonfuls. Shape the dough into a large ball and then roll it out with a rolling pin. Use your extra flour for dusting the surface and the cookie cutters. Cut out the cookies with the cookie cutters. Lay them out on parchment paper. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. While the cookies are cooling mix the water with the icing sugar. Separate the icing into different bowls for every different color icing you want. Add a few drops of food coloring to each color and mix. Have fun decorating the cookies! These Christmas sugar cookies are best eaten during the holidays and store for up to a week in a sealed container.
